From Teaching Knowledge to Learning Competencies

Description
This course introduces the implementation of a Competency-Based Education (CBE) approach in higher education. It details its European foundations: the Bologna Process (1999), the Lisbon Strategy (2000), and the Copenhagen Process (2002). It describes the distinctive features of CBE compared to traditional approaches (such as project-based learning), and provides its specific vocabulary. It also explains why CBE is robust in the face of artificial intelligence. Participants will learn to draft a competency framework, a central tool for shifting assessment from knowledge to competencies, structuring a coherent curriculum, and clarifying the value of a qualification to students and socio-professional partners.
Learning objectives / expected outcomes
• Place Competency-Based Education (CBE) within its European policy context by identifying the three founding texts — the Bologna Process, the Lisbon Strategy, and the Copenhagen Process — and their respective contributions to higher education reform.
• Distinguish CBE from traditional pedagogical approaches, including project-based learning, and articulate its added value for higher education institutions.
• Use the specific vocabulary of CBE accurately and appropriately in an academic and institutional context.
