Description

This course explores the foundations and modalities of competency-based assessment. Starting from the definition of a competent person, it examines how to assess competency rigorously. It addresses the different forms of assessment — peer assessment, instructor assessment, and professional assessment — as well as the distinction between formative assessment of progression and summative assessment of level attainment. The course also presents two essential tools: the rubric, to bring objectivity to evaluative judgement, and the portfolio, as a device for tracking and showcasing the student\'s competency development.

Learning objectives / expected outcomes

• Define what it means to be a competent person and derive the implications for assessment practices in higher education.
• Design rigorous competency-based assessments by selecting modalities appropriate to the context — peer assessment, instructor assessment, and professional assessment.
• Differentiate between formative assessment of progression and summative assessment of level attainment, and integrate both into a coherent assessment strategy.
• Construct a rubric that brings transparency and objectivity to evaluative judgement in competency-based settings.
