The Inner Development Goals in Higher Education – From Personal to Societal Change

Across Alliance — e-Campus

Description

Provided that personal growth should be an integral part of teaching and learning in higher education, what role could the Inner Development Goals play in that? We affirm finally that any deliberate attempt to reach a rational and enduring state of equilibrium by planned measures, rather than by chance or catastrophe, must ultimately be founded on a basic change of values and goals at individual, national, and world levels. (Meadows, D. H.et al. (1972): The limits to growth: a report to the club of Rome).

This call for a change in individual values and goals in the context of sustainability considerations is more than 50 years old. Recently, with the development of the ‘Inner Development Guide’ (IDG, former: Inner Development Goals), this view of the importance of personal development within the context of global developments has been revisited. The IDG can be seen as complementary to the SDGs, the 17 sustainability goals of the UN.

The IDG offer a relatively open framework for dimensions of inner development. In this two-part workshop, we will take a closer look at the IDG and then work on individually chosen dimensions of personal growth. Based on this, we will then discuss ways for meaningful integration of the IDG into our teaching practise.

We will start with our own development as teachers (and people), and then move on to considerations of how to encourage and support personal development in our students. The fo-cus will be on an integration within the subject, in the participants\\\' individual teaching situations.

The workshop is designed as a shared space for generating ideas. Thus, in addition to some input from the trainer, co-creation plays an important role. Therefore, your active participation is essential.

The workshop will take place on October 28, 2026; a second session is scheduled for November 5, 2026, for teachers who wish to further develop their skills.
